Hair Loss
The causes of hair loss may finally have been discovered. Included among the guilty contributors to hair loss are poor diet, low iron and protein consumption, medication interactions, and genetics. However, what is still misunderstood is the reason certain areas of the scalp, for example the top and front, are prone to hair loss, while other areas of the scalp are immune to the balding effect.
Drugs such as Propecia and Rogaine have long been associated with the slowing of genetically-caused hair loss, but until recently, physicians had no way no knowing how well these hair loss treatments were working. Now, thanks to Dr. Bernard Cohen of the Hair Loss Center of Miami, hair restoration specialists are finally realizing an advantage in the hair loss battle. Dr. Cohen has been providing hair restoration services in Miami for 25 years.

Hair loss doesn't occur suddenly (unless from a traumatic injury or illness). Generally, hair growth has a cycle of 3-8 years. At the end of each growth cycle, the shafts of the hairs are shed from their follicles and new hair grows in their places. When a person is balding, his hair begins to thin with each growth cycle, and each growth cycle is shorter than the last, until there is nothing left. This process, called miniaturization, is the real force behind pattern balding.
In order to treat hair loss, physicians need to know how fast a patient's hair is thinning. But in order to do that, they need to be able to measure the amount of hair that the patient has at certain points in his treatment. It is common practice for hair restoration specialists to use the Norwood Scale, a black-and-while series of drawings that show different stages of balding. But a picture cannot be quantified. Dr. Cohen has invented a device, called the Quantimeter, which can measure the amount of hair in a certain area of scalp. This number can then be used to determine how different hair loss treatments are working for different clients.
